Burn Permits

Step1: State Issued Permits

The Kiowa Fire Protection District requires residents who request an open burning permit (other than a recreational fire) to first acquire a state open burning permit if required. State issued permits can be applied for through the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment at no cost to the applicant. To apply for a state permit:

State issued permits are valid for one calendar year (January 1 through December 31) and allow for a maximum of 50 burns during that calendar year.

Step2: Local Permits

To request a local burn permit, residents must contact Kiowa Fire Protection District by phone at (303) 621-2233. An inspection may be required.

Effective August 20 2022: Stage 1 fire burn restrictions

EXECUTIVE ORDER – Modifying Burning Restrictions to STAGE I BURN RESTRICTIONS

Pursuant to the authority vested in me as the Sheriff of Elbert County, Colorado, by Ordinance No.

20-02, and Colorado Revised Statute 30-15-405(1), I, Timothy D. Norton, hereby issue this Executive Order pertaining to the declaration of the open fire and open burning restrictions.

On or about DATE, the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office issued an Executive Order, modifying the burn restrictions to STAGE I RESTRICTIONS. Based upon recommendations of local Fire Chiefs, and the burn restriction evaluation guideline it is determined that a decrease or increase from/to.

Stage I Restrictions

THE STAGE I BURN RESTRICTIONS ACTIVITIES ALLOW WITHOUT PERMIT:

  • Fires within liquid-fueled or gas-fueled stoves, grills, fire pits, or other gas or liquid-fueled appliances.
  • Outdoor welding or hot work.
  • Residential use of charcoal grills, smokers, tiki torches, fires in chimneys or other portable fireplaces or patio fire pits, as long as the fires are supervised by a responsible person at least 18 years old. Portable fire pits and chimneys must have a lid or screen, and all openings must be less than 1/4-inch.
  • Small recreational fires contained in fixed permanent metal/steel fire pits (rock fire rings are considered temporary and not permanent) with flame lengths no taller than 4 feet. Recreational pit dimensions shall not exceed 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in depth.
  • Use of indoor fireplaces and wood-burning stoves with an approved chimney spark arrestor.
  • The sale and use of fireworks in compliance with state and local regulations.
  • Use of educational rockets, exploding targets, tracer ammunition and incendiary ammunition.
  • Fire suppression or fire department training fires.
  • Discharge of firearm

THE STAGE I BURN RESTRICTIONS ACTIVITIES ALLOWED WITH PERMIT:

  • Open burning per local fire department regulations
  • Outdoor welding or hot work
  • Professional fireworks displays
  • Tethered sky lantern

The STAGE I RESTRICTIONS shall take effect immediately upon the issuance of this Executive Order. The STAGE I RESTRICTIONS shall remain in effect until such time the restrictions are modified by either the Elbert County Sheriff or by the Board of County Commissioner of Elbert County pursuant to Ordinance No. 20-02, as amended.

  • Residential use of charcoal grill fires and smokers when such use is supervised by a responsible party at least 18 years of age.
  • Fire suppression or fire department training fires.
  • Discharge of firearms.

THE STAGE II BURN RESTRICTIONS ACTIVITIES ALLOWED WITH PERMIT:
